There are several meanings connected to the angel tattoos. The first, and probably the most important, is the religious one. Angels are the messengers of God and are associated with the protection of souls. They can also represent the struggle between right and wrong, between the good and the evil. Angels can be interpreted as a link between the material world and the spiritual world, a way to connect to the afterlife.
Angels can be shown in a variety of ways, from the angel counselor who often has light or the sun behind them, the symbol of leadership in the earthly life, to the more protective angel, depicted with her eyes looking down whilst holding swords or other weapons. The meaning however is not always positive: there are also evil angels, those who were driven by the same God and who now embody sadness, suffering and pain. They represent negative thoughts, but also the outcome of a troubled past. Sometimes only the wings can be shown as synonymous with freedom and independence.
