The swallow is another symbol popular with sailor and like the sparrow points to a goal achieved: a sailor with one swallow had navigated more than 5,000 nautical miles (9260 km), a sailor with two swallows had traveled over 10,000! Because at that time travelling these great distances was extremely difficult and dangerous, automatically the swallow became a symbol of experience and great value.
Another peculiar feature of the swallow is that they always return to the same place to mate and nest: the swallow ensures a safe return to home for the sailor. Legend has it that if a sailor drowns at sea, it will be the swallow that lifts his soul into the sky.
